A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my career."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
