🔗 Share this article The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites. As I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder. His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara. Overcoming Early Hurdles Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract. Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled. An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament. A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused. Inspiration and On-Field Identity Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye. His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been sent off at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips. Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said. Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham. Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the senior top prize in the future. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.” Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
