Prime Small Screen Choices: 7 Essential Motion Pictures This Coming Week

Top Selection

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold satire examines the oppressive nature of women's appearance as well as the feared consequences of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a brilliant performance playing Elisabeth, an aging film star reduced to starring in an aerobics show on the small screen. Pushed out thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying process known as "The Substance". This produces a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a steadily more vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery stars Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take a hiatus from writing about international wars to join an opulent ship with a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her husband, as well as other filthy rich passengers. But after an enigmatic female falls into the sea during the evening and all passengers insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Available now, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills with this nifty ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of the spirit. When a household including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their fresh home, the lens – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom via this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by government spies to spy on the alleged criminal, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

The director's contained scarefest holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, several kidnappings has rendered the youth frightened. When Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he fears the worst. But the non-functional line in the room keeps ringing, with eerie communicators offering help, while the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, nighttime, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the battle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about monetising the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, yet Chastain achieves to present the character as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This period's additional entry by the same director is a espionage tale as tight similar to the collars worn by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to identify a double agent within their ranks from five suspects – among them is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, resulting in an engaging psychological game of deception or honesty takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
