Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
