Nicolas Sarkozy plans a book next month named A Prisoner’s Diary, detailing his experience served in custody.

The announcement emerged less than two weeks following the former president was released while he contests his conviction on charges of unlawful coordination in a case to acquire presidential race money linked to the government of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars one sees little, and nothing to do,” he notes in an extract, indicating the memoir centers around his thoughts during isolation instead of extensive analysis regarding the packed and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing in La Santé, where there is endless commotion,” he continues. “The din persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, he had appeared remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as gruelling. He had told the court: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this ordeal tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

He, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural past president from the EU and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he had said he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to go through the texts he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, in which a blameless person is sentenced to jail later flees to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

The former leader remained in isolation to protect him in a space approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison located in the capital. Security personnel occupied a neighbouring cell.

It was stated that he consumed solely dairy snacks in prison worried that prison cuisine might have been spat on. Options were available for self-catering but refused this, as per accounts. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain each day throughout the jail term, stated during proceedings he would be safer released than inside. “There were threats against his life, heard shouts after dark plus rapid actions in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

He entered custody on 21 October after a French court imposed a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy related to a plan to secure election financing for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and another court case is scheduled for next spring.
