The McLaren driver edged out team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who took the title advantage from Piastri by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City recently, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair during the running before the sprint shootout scheduled for 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the points battle, lying 36 points behind behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his team opted for a different programme. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he lost control at corner four during the early running. The Japanese slid over the exit kerbs before spinning across the escape zone, and was blessed to get away with just a slight brush of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also spun, at the conclusion of the session, spinning around through the quick descending Mergulho corner leading to the last turn on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were well clear of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's car in third, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's pace. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with Sauber's Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
