The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
