Cameron Norrie achieved the biggest success of his professional journey by coming back from a early deficit to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the Paris Masters.

Even though he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win represents Norrie's first ever success over a sitting world No 1.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the newest British man in the record books to beat a global number one. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I lost in the first round of qualies here. I just sought to appreciate my performance in the latter part of the year. To achieve a win like this, it's the biggest win of my professional life, my initial victory over the world No 1 and likely the strongest player in the sport right now."

Norrie, seeded No 31, also ended Alcaraz's dominant run of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive elite tournament wins, which represented the finest stretch of results in the Spaniard's young professional path.

Contest Overview

The top seed looked to be moving confidently to a win in the beginning as he eased through the opening set. However, the British contender gradually worked himself into contention by serving with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, physical rallies. His unceasing steadiness and reliability steadily left its mark.

For much of the contest, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old seemed particularly uncomfortable hitting his forehand, which has been the most effective stroke in the world for a large part of this year, committing 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 mistakes. On the other side, Norrie presented his opponent so few mistakes, keeping up his consistency, physicality and power all match while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to advance into the court and attack well.

Professional Journey

After dealing for months due to a significant arm issue and challenges with his game, Norrie fell as far down as 91st in the rankings this season. Having reached the advanced stages at Wimbledon and the clay-court Grand Slam fourth round since then, this victory reinforces the experienced player's progress as he aims to come back to the world's top twenty and further. The Spanish sensation, notwithstanding his extraordinary success, is still hasn't solve how to deliver his finest performance in indoor conditions.
