Everyday tennis enthusiasts will have an opportunity to claim a seven-figure prize when they compete against tennis' top professionals - featuring leading player the Spanish champion - in a one-point battle prior to January's Australian Open

Organizers of the Australian Open have revealed the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will pair 10 amateur players against elite athletes in a elimination competition at the tournament grounds

The Unique Tournament Functions

Competitors are set to play 'the decision-making game' to establish who takes the serve or return position, and the competitor securing the point will move forward to the following stage

The winner of the event will take home £490,000

For comparison, players who advanced to the penultimate round of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

The US Open staged a redesigned, standalone mixed doubles tournament in August which encouraged top singles players to participate, with the victors receiving a million-dollar prize

The Australian Open held its first-ever One Point Slam this year, but the cash prize was sixty thousand Australian dollars and it received minimal attention

One top competitor was the single high-ranked athlete participating, and his run finished when he sent the one and only serve allowed failing to clear the net in his quarter-final

Event Details

Officials have not specified precisely how the event will operate, but it is expected to follow a similar format to the most recent iteration

The elite players will be permitted to make one service and the amateurs two times - as is the standard practice in standard play

While it is uncertain how the draw will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the location will be the Rod Laver Arena rather than the smaller Kia Arena

The last matches will be held in a nighttime schedule instead of 1pm local time

Entry Information

Any Australians - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with Tennis Australia - can enter 'quick-match event' tournaments at their community centers

The champions of the grassroots tournaments will then go into a selection process, with an everyday competitor from every geographic division picked to compete in the 'final competition' in a nighttime event on the specified date

There will also be a preliminary competition in the final month which amateurs, aspiring competitors, famous personalities and sport stars can compete in

It begins on Monday, 12 January and the two winners will qualify for Wednesday's 'final showdown' with the other eight amateurs and top-ranked athletes

"No matter your experience, the overall victor will claim the prize. Registrations will open soon at facilities nationwide"

Competition planners stated there were "more big names to be unveiled imminently", while the event portal said "famous personalities" would be taking part
